Past Habits

Actions done regularly in the past that no longer happen.

Past States

Situations or conditions that were true in the past but are no longer true now.

She used to be very shy. (She isn't now)

Contrast with Present

Often implies things are different now, which is great for storytelling.

I didn't use to like coffee, but now I love it.

Used to vs Past Simple

Used to = repeated habit/state. Past Simple = one completed event.

We visited them in 2019. (once) vs We used to visit every summer. (habit)
