Past Continuous when vs while

'when' introduces a short interrupting event; 'while' introduces an ongoing background action. Master these connectors with 40 questions.

Set:

Exercise 1: 'when' for the interrupting event

'when' is followed by a short Past Simple action that interrupts an ongoing Continuous action: I was watching TV WHEN the phone rang.

Set:

Two connectors, two jobs. 'while' sets the ongoing background; 'when' signals the interrupting event.

while + Continuous

While+was/were + -ing(background)

Note: 'while' can also go with Past Simple to mean 'during the time that' in some cases, but the most common pattern is while + Continuous.
