The classic interrupted action: I was doing something (Continuous) WHEN something happened (Simple). 40 questions to perfect this pattern.
Pattern: [Subject] + was/were + -ing (background) + WHEN + [subject] + Past Simple (interruption). The Continuous action was already happening when the Simple action interrupted it.
